William H. Bolden Scholarship Fund

William H. Bolden, the Academy’s first Black faculty member, was appointed in 1969 after sixteen years of teaching in a Washington D.C. inner city school. In addition to teaching English, Bolden had a strong presence in the Admissions office, often helping to discover, engage and win over future Exonians.

In 2001, Gerard Griffin ’86 established the William H. Bolden Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship’s purpose is to provide financial aid to inner city students from parochial or public schools, with first preference given to students from Washington D.C. Second preference is given to inner city students from other major U.S. metropolitan areas.
