Alumni Awards

Each year, the Academy honors individuals for exceptional service to Exeter and the larger world.

The Academy recognizes outstanding service through three awards: the Founder’s Day Award for long-time service to the school, the President’s Award for recent service to the school and the John Phillips Award for service to humanity.

Exeter's long history of educating future leaders gives us fertile ground for selection, but we need your help. We encourage all alumni to review the guidelines below for each award and to submit nominations for qualified candidates at any time. You may find it helpful to review the list of past recipients and recent citations and remarks.

Founder's Day Award (see past recipients)

The Founder's Day Award is given to an alumnus, alumna, faculty emeritus or emerita, retired staff member, parent or friend who has demonstrated exceptional service to the Academy. The service must be extraordinary—beyond what is regularly contributed by others doing similar service—and the nominee must still be living at the time of nomination. Duration of service may be of any length, but should probably be of five years or more. The recipient may receive the award only once and should not have previously received the John Phillips Award.

John Phillips Award (see past recipients)

The John Phillips Award is given to an alumnus or alumna of the Academy, still living at the time of nomination, whose life demonstrates founder John Phillips' ideal of goodness and knowledge united in noble character and usefulness to mankind. The nominee should have contributed significantly to the welfare of community, country or humanity, beyond any volunteer service to the Academy.

President's Award (see past recipients)

The President's Award is to be given by the president of the General Alumni Association (GAA) to no more than three present members of the Alumni Council who, through their efforts as volunteers for Exeter, have made outstanding contributions to the Academy within the past two years. The award(s) shall be presented during Exeter Leadership Weekend. Nominees for the President's Award must have made an outstanding contribution to promoting the activities and goals of the GAA and the Academy. Such contributions include: exceptional work within a PEA-defined volunteer role such as class officer or class agent, making an innovative enhancement to the Exeter community or performing other extraordinary types of service.

The award is for volunteer service performed within the last two years. Any Alumni Council member may receive the award, with the exception of current President's Award Committee members, current GAA officers and past recipients of the John Phillips Award or the Founder's Day Award.
